Artist Printmaker | Katharine Green
Artists Statement
I have always been a keen painter and graduated with a BA Hons in Illustration at the University of Portsmouth in 1997. My love of printmaking was sparked only a few years ago in 2013 when I had one of my watercolours “Female sparrow hawk” exhibited at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. I was so taken with all of the wonderful prints on show that I immediately wanted to revisit a medium I first tried back at school, linocuts. As a painter I was keen to incorporate painting and the essence of the drawing process into the finished piece. My style translates the original sketch into an outline print. I often use strong colours like black, brown, and blues to give the piece a striking outline. Then, in contrast I tint the print with watercolour to create a translucency I’ve often loved about stained glass. The result being the style I use today.
My subjects are very much inspired by the natural world around me in my native part of England in Hertfordshire. I love following the seasons and look to capture the flora and fauna with their textures, colours, and the animal characters within the landscape around me. You will also notice that I’m a cat person and my feline friends often make an appearance in my work. Most of my prints are exclusively limited editions. I hand paint each one giving them all a real sense of individuality. Many of these pieces have been licensed as artist greeting cards with publisher Green Pebble and Feature in Art Books “The Illustrated Garden” and “Limited Edition, Cambridge original printmakers” by Norfolk based publisher Mascot Media.
