On the 28th April 1980, the present (11th) Duke of Marlborough wrote to John Piper regarding the possibility of doing some drawings of Blenheim with an invitation to visit that autumn. Piper revisited on a number of occasions and by October 1985 was able to deliver a portfolio of paintings, of which the Duke chose to keep eleven views of the house with its garden temples, fountains, lodges and temples. Piper also made a number of prints of Blenheim including Blenheim Gates, an etching which appeared in the artist’s Eightieth Anniversary portfolio.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Piper’s death, the great lithographer Stanley Jones of the Curwen Press was commissioned to produce a lithographic interpretation of Piper’s triptych of Blenheim’s Vanbrugh Bridge. Jones had worked with Piper on many of his prints since the early 1960s.
The lithograph is in a numbered edition of 100 and bears the Curwen Studio stamp. It is the first authorised Piper print to be published for 20 years.
