Sam Hencher

13.08.24 - 24.08.24

We're thrilled to present a small exhibition of stunning new paintings by local artist Sam Hencher.

Lucky for us, Sam has recently re-located to Saffron Walden from Berlin and is quickly familiarising himself with his new environment through sketching and painting our bustling town life as well as the beautiful surrounding Cambridgeshire and Essex countryside. His paintings portray hints of modern life, imbued with classical compositions and application.

"My work is done in watercolour or oils depending on the subject. I like to paint both landscapes/cityscapes and figuratively and am more inspired by the light and mood of the subject than the physical element that is used to convey it.

"I paint very quickly without the aid of photos as reference - using sketches made in situ and memory to achieve a looser, less laboured effect - my aim being to convey a feeling or emotion that the viewer can relate to without worrying too much about the actual subject of the painting."

A former student of the prodigious Florence Academy of Art as well as a Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year finalist, it is clear Sam is remarkably skilled and unsurprisingly his work is widely sought after. Don't miss this chance to see a sample of Sam's work up close at our gallery in August.
